Band Intro #4: Matt Evans

If there was ever a "that guy" in the band, Matt Evans is the definition.

BUT that's a good thing. Every band needs that guy: the guy who can lift spirits, lighten the mood at rehearsals (at least when I'm tense), joke around, and most of all have a ton of fun. This is a great unique quality about Matt.

Matt's a senior this year attending "home high school" (homeschool), and is hoping to be enrolled at Cincinnati Christian University, which I believe he'll fit right in. His compassion and his love for others before himself is unique and an excellent quality. If I needed help at this exact moment, he'd be here as soon as possible. He has a love for people and helping people that needs to be shown to the world (maybe it's why he looks like Bono).

I remember going on outreaches with our church, and seeing the look on his face when talking to someone in need. He gives people the time of day and doesn't just pass by or hand out a bottle water to a car. He takes that extra step to pray for them and sit and listen to their story. It's how we even became friends- I had one of those breakdown moments we all get in life, and he listened to my story.

Matt is also a great guitar player. It's somewhat of a "hidden treasure" talent. It wasn't until about a year ago when I figured out he actually was musical, let alone being able to play the guitar. I knew he was artistic and unique from the common man, but the guitar? I've only known him since late 2007/early 2008, and spring of 2009 he tells me he plays the guitar?!

Not only does he play the guitar, but he works with others in the band environment exceptionally well, especially for being new to a band setting. He really does well with people, but he really knows how to fill the space. Now when I say "fill the space", I mean musically, emotionally, performing, and with people. Musically, he'll come up with a really solid strum pattern. Emotionally, he can help pump us up, get us in that mood to perform. In a performing aspect, he can get the audience involved. With people, he can really loosen us all up to not just be a band, but a family.

Thanks Matt, for everything you do in my life, in our band, in others lives! I love you like a brother.

Band Intro #3: Chadley Gagnon

I'll be honest: I don't know where to even begin with Chadley. This may be an interesting post!

Chad is literally (in my opinion) a prodigy of our time. He is the Mozart of our era. He is a true musician, unlike most people in this world. He has such an incredible unique talent.

What do I mean by "true musician"? As soon as Chad hits the keys, strings, grabs the drum sticks...whatever it may be, he goes into another state of mind. He goes into this world filled to the brim with music- mind, body and soul. I've only been lucky enough to reach that state 4 or 5 times in my entire music career. I guess you can think of it as a hallucination. Music is the incense, and you're breathing it all in. You don't see the world around you, all you hear and feel and control is the music. It truly is a reviving and rejuvenating experience for a musician. Though most don't get the chance to fall into the funk like Chad- it is literally 97% of the time.

I think it's so impressive the way Chad also goes to the beat of his own drum in society- being who he is without being afraid to show it. It's a great characteristic. In ways I'm sorry to say, I envy it. I wish I, as well of all of us, could be as carefree as him. He's not afraid of the future and worrying about college, or money, or afraid of being alone- it's all about his music, his style, making friends, living, laughing, having fun.

He's told me before he wants to jump on a boxcar train and just go around the country and see where he lands up- I may join.

Chad is also an incredibly funny guy- He's sometimes a man of few words, but the few words make the entire night. He is clever and witty. The memories that I've been able to have with Chad are some of the best, especially if I'm not feeling to hot. There will be moments (and if you're friends with Chad you probably do this too) where I'll remember something he said months ago, and I'll crack up out loud in the middle of class (or Starbucks, right now).

Chad plays the bass, keyboards, drums, electric, acoustic, viola, violin, I'm sure there are more... He is also extremely advanced in music theory, his brain is music. His life is music. It's incredible.

Band Intro #2: Danny Watson

Let's recall back to 2008 (can you believe that was 2 years ago?!) It was almost 2 years ago on the date, and I was leading worship over at the Vineyard Community Church Student Union, high school ministries. It was at a Design Team meeting when I was told I'd be working with a new guitarist- little did I know it'd be Danny Watson.

Danny walked in, played confidently, and not only that- I got along with him! Now in 2010, things have changed, but we have been able to remain friends throughout.

Where do I even start with Danny? Well, lets start with his incredible personality and wit. Anyone can go up to Danny, talk about the white brick wall he's leaning against, and he wouldn't mind. Not only that, but he's more than happy to have a conversation with anyone. He's one of the most personable people I've ever met, with great sense of humor. Oh man, have we had our moments of crying laughing...

Danny is also a great big brother to Nik, his brother who had been diagnosed with a brain tumor around thanksgiving of 2008. I remember going down to Children's and seeing Danny, knowing he spent the night (sometimes many nights) at the hospital supporting Nik. There were days he'd describe where it would be: Hospital, School, Hospital, home to change, Hospital, and then do it all again. I'm speechless at his selflessness.

Danny is also very artistic, musically and visually. Danny is enrolled at Cincinnati State studying Graphic Design, and at one time created an entire website for logansand.com, he also has been given the opportunity to work with Mark Hand over at the Student Union, and his work there is also fantastic. As well, his style is classic and original: jeans, converse, bright colored tees, ties, vests, jackets, TOMS, you name it- he's got it before it's hot.

I am more than proud of Danny, though I don't mention it to him as much as I should. Danny, you are like an older brother to me, and I love you. You have impacted my life in so many ways, and have taught me so much musically, artistically, and have help my personality greatly. Thank you.

Band Intro #1: Larry Handley.

As most of you may know, Larry Handley (besides being a fantastic drummer) is also the meteorologist for Good Morning Tristate, Channel 9 WCPO Cincinnati.

If you're up and on your way in the morning, taking the kids to school, or listening to Warm 98, you've probably heard him. Larry has been working at WCPO since 1999, and now is titled the "Most Experienced Weather-man" in the city.

I'm proud to say I've gotten the chance to talk more than music with Larry. First, he is incredibly talented and insightful when it comes to the world of broadcasting. If you didn't know, I'm enrolled at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in Electronic Media, with main focus of TV Production, Broadcasting. Interesting enough, Larry also graduated from the E-media program, and started at Channel 9 while in college. He knows the business and what he's doing and, not only that, but he does it well.

Though, he's a role model in many other ways- a loving husband, dad, and great friend. I think what I love about Larry the most, is that he's one of those friends that not only supports you, but challenges you to a higher level or goal. It seems like anytime I need help, whether that's with the band, or college, or something totally random in my life, he can suggest what to do, and/or challenge me to go a completely different route in completing or fixing the problem.

I can say without question he is a great friend, and I consider him family. Thanks Larry, for the impact you have put on my life!

Logan Sand Live "New Day!" Release Show!

I don't really know how to explain the emotion I felt after the show, even still, 2 days after.


The show was going to be good on the bands behalf. They were solid and knew the songs, I knew they would do excellent. The rest was up to the volunteer work, and obviously the people (maybe you) who decided to come.

I suppose I could describe the show as the best experience on stage in my entire life, and a dream of mine is now fulfilled.


1. Set-Up: The "Pre-Pre Show".

Four of us (myself, Madison, Tara, and my Dad) came in at 10 o'clock, not knowing what to expect. The theatre was ready for us, and we spend most of the morning re-arranging seats and setting up the merchandise, instruments, sound and lighting.

I was so surprised on how smooth everything went. Literally everything- easy setup with instruments, no sound or lighting difficulties, we even got through a rehearsal of the entire show! Then it was off to VIP to meet people coming into the door.

2. Pre-Show: The Support.

I was absolutely speechless at the support from friends, family, and complete strangers at the show. I just kept thinking about how many people came to see the band, listen to music, buy t-shirts and CDs, what support!

VIP was also a great support (probably because of the free beer in the VIP lounge), and was a lot of fun seeing friends and family. I even had a friend of mine, Doug Furia, dress

up like me. Who would've thought?

3. The Final Moments.

As people filled in and settled down, we prayed and had a beat box circle. What can I say? We're like a family in ways, so we do stupid things. We were all ready to do this show, and were a little more nervous than expected.

We were thinking the show would have around 175-200 people, but...people heard about the show, and wanted to go, giving us more than 120 tickets sold at the door- that's at least 320+ people!

But we were ready- and the band took the stage.


4. The Show.

Well, we had a great show, the band did great, and audience participation was excellent.

The show went really well- flowed nicely. People really seemed to enjoy all the songs, which I am thankful for. Jenn Silver did a great job getting everyone relaxed and really set the mood. The band represented very well. The band was really tight and their talents/abilities were shown. Not to get off the beaten path- but

they're great musicians. Man, I couldn't have asked for a better group of talented people.

Also, the audience was supportive and enthusiastic-you know, it takes a lot to show talents and hard work on stage, and it's a great thing when people cheer, clap, dance, anything to know we're doing okay. It adds gas to the adrenaline fire. So thanks for all of your support.

Well, hahah, not scared! Just anxious. Many feelings and emotions have been flowing this past week. It's a lot to try and handle: from the venue to the design of the album. But hey, I'm attempting to control everything to the best of my ability and the rest is in Gods hands!

One Week and Three Lessons Learned.

Well, the title says it all: One Week.

It's pretty incredible, you know? I mean, I go back in my mind to November, when I had this vision of a show, what the new album will be like, a band, performing, tours, and memories to tell my kids.

I'm proud to say that it's now a reality.

So, there's one week left. Where have we been? What have I learned? Well, I have learned many things throughout the last three months...

Number 1: It's great to have a band.

In the beginning, I was just happy to have people willing to play no matter the circumstances. They take time out of their afternoons and weekends. For example, Larry Handley (drums) works at WCPO 9 Cincinnati from 4:55 a.m. until 1p.m. and then will be at rehearsal until 5p.m., taking time away from his family (and sleep!) Also, Danny Watson (guitar) works part time and goes to school at Cincinnati State, and in between working and school, he somehow gets the time for these rehearsals. Talk about dedication! These guys have stuck with me.
Not only are they committed, but they are all so very talented. They're sort of like hidden jewels... most people never have seen them perform. Some people may not have know they play. Maybe have never had the chance to, but I am very blessed with these people in my band, and in my life.

Number 2: Learning to Micro-Manage.

You know, when you don't have a record company to help you through, there's a lot to think about. Now of course, I had my dad, Jeffrey Sand, and help from friend/ P.R. Director, Hunter Frederick to get everything up on its feet. I obviously have it very good, but I also needed to have a say in every decision and situation. It's definitely a double-sided world: It's about the Logan Sand Band, an image, album designs, t-shirt designs, keeping control of social media outlets (youtube, facebook, logansand.com, this blog), song lists, band rehearsals, writing, composing, creating, selling tickets, ticket design, talking the show up, finding new venues for the future, the tour, buying a band van, rooms on the road, finances, expenses, performing, staying healthy, marketing/advertising the right way, reaching out to a certain demographic, I mean, the list can go on and on to the finest details. Insane right? I know now what it truly means to Micro-Manage.

Number 3: I love what I'm doing.

Though this creation has had rough points throughout it's life, it has been an incredibly exciting and fun journey. At the end of the day, when I lie down in bed, I smile and think, "I love what I'm doing." It is my passion, and my life. It is my joy. My creation. My pride. My work. I am proud of it, and want to show the world. Even though I hope to bring smiles to faces when I play, I know I bring a smile to mine. I love what I'm doing.

Well, one week left. I'll be optimistic, proud, and most of all, have some fun.

The Rehearsals

You know, when you need a band, every musician dreams of a band who'll be committed, on time, and exceptionally talented musicians.

I guess my dream came true.


It was early October of last year, and someone asked me to in this battle of the bands as a "Guest Artist". Remember, I used ALL studio musicians on both albums, so all I could think was,

"How the hell am I being a guest artist at a battle of the bands when I don't have a band?!"

So, i did what any musician in my place would do: I begged. I pleaded. I prayed! Well, maybe not, but the 6 people I asked took the positions. Electrics, BGV's, Bass, Acoustic, Perc., and Drums. What luck.

It's interesting from going live with a solo "coffee-shop" feel, to a full-band. When I would play solo, I would fill in where I need to, add whatever I wanted, and the list goes on. Then there is this other world I'm getting used to: the "Band" setting. Where everyone has their own part, and everything has to work together. It's a challenging process for me, but it's a learning experience too.

So, here we are- two weeks out from the show, and seven rehearsals later... here we are, sounding like a band. Creating a show. Fulfilling one of my dreams.

These guys are incredibly talented, and if not to come see me, I recommend seeing these guys at the show. Awesome, awesome job.

Jenn Silver featured at Logan Sand "New Day" Release Show

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Jenn Silver. For the release show (January 22nd, by the way...), she will be opening for me. Not only that, but she's my back up singer as well.

Interesting how things come about: I remember it was the summer of 2007 when I met Jenn and did a production intership at the church she worked at with her... little did I know she was an incredible singer songwriter!

If you don't want to come see me, at least come see Jenn. Soulful, sweet, melodic sounds come from this young woman. If anything, you WILL love to watch her perform!!

Well, yeah, it's been awhile. I'm a slacker, apologies.

There's a lot to tell you all, and it's very exciting where we've gone in the last few weeks!

First, we know that the OFFICIAL Release show of "NEW DAY!" (the new album), is JANUARY 22ND! Ah, that's in less than a month... whew. Second, Santa was great to me, and I got a new piece of equipment- a Yamaha CP300 Stage Piano. So, for the non-piano gurus, that's basically a bad-ass piano for the stage. I am very blessed and fortunate to get a piano like this, it sounds and plays so wonderfully.
